WHY CHOOSE A CUSTOM
GEARSET?
The Custom Tooth Profile
We pride themselves on
our relationship with our Gearset Manufacturers, Albins and PPG, who
custom designed, researched and developed the high performance gearsets
we represent, to the highest standard.
The
process of gear design is detailed, technical and precise, starting
with CAD drawings developed in a state of the art “control room” using
the latest software available. These blueprints ensure specifications
including tooth count, desired gear ratio and basics like “internal
gearbox dimensions”, for your project are incorporated, to produce the
strongest, lowest wearing and efficient, tooth profile.
The custom tooth profile
drawings are only the first stage of the process. The next step in the
production of a Custom Gearset is creating unique tools to cut the gear
set to exact design. These tools are high-tech, modern and of the
highest quality to ensure each gear set is produced with ultimate
precision.
A steel billet (a solid
piece of pure steel) is then carved, sliced and shaped with absolute
precision by automated, robotic machinery to accurately mirror the
design blueprints. Whether helically or straight cut, gearsets are
meticulously created with strength and performance.
To
compliment the unique tooth profile and further enhance strength and
reliability a custom manufactured design and dog engagement gearset
uses a distinctive radiused and lightweight dog ring. The Custom dog
gear design promotes smooth and rapid gear selection through larger dog
engagement pattern, reducing wear with radiused teeth.
Competitor Tooth Profiles
Even some of the most
recognized competitor’s, with long term, highly regarded reputations
within the high performance field, are still utilizing agricultural,
technically-basic and inferior design and cutting methods. These
competitors are manufacturing the same product they have for decades,
primarily to avoid re-developing existing machinery, tooling and
product designs. These “old school” models are susceptible to wear,
pitting and entire tooth breakage.
The Advanced Custom Heat Treating Process
The last phase of the
gearset production is heat treatment (case hardening). This is not a
new approach to strengthening metal component and most clientele of the
automotive industry would be familiar with the process of parts being
dipped into a heat treating salt bath containing various elements but
most importantly carbon.
The “Controlled Atmosphere” heat treatment process applied is a more
precise and refined method from the original salt bath heat treating.
Using a computer controlled atmosphere (furnace) where carbon and other
elements are monitored and maintained at optimum levels via highly
advanced software and sensors, ensures accurate and efficient heat
treating, consistently producing a well hardened and strengthened
product for customers.
High temperature levels
are produced to attract and infuse carbon onto the surface of the
product, penetrating to calculated design depths to harden it.
“Rockwell” tests (an international standard of hardness testing) are
performed at regular intervals with sacrificial components as a form of
ongoing quality control.
Competitor Heat Treating Process
The basic heat treating
technique is at times “hit and miss” given element levels fluctuate and
more specifically carbon content is “guesstimated” producing
inconsistencies with this practice. Salt Bath techniques were developed
pre the 1950’s and have not evolved since then.
The Custom “Product in Stock” Philosophy
When
you are involved in motor sport, you want to know that replacement
parts for your race car or team are only as far away as the nearest
phone and that includes gearsets. Our custom manufacturer produces
reliable, high performance, tough gearbox for the motor sport arena,
consistently coping with big horsepower, hard driving and extreme loads.
So, when a competitor
brand gearbox fails,we have a large range of products available to
support race and rally clients.
Which set do I need
when ordering?
1994-current 5 speed
WRX Owners take note.
Subaru Gearboxes have an
unusual variation in the manufacture of 1st and 2nd gear and 3rd and
4th gear on a different year that can cause problems when fitting
gearsets. Its therefore very important you know what year gearbox you
have in your car. This has become difficult at times as most Subaru
owners are now buying a custom gearset after breaking a few standard
gearboxes and they may have replaced the gearbox with an entire gearbox
from a different year model vehicle.
Please note the
information below before ordering.
MY 94,95,96 up to 6/97
Gearboxes have single synchro 1st and 2nd gear up to 7/95
Single synchro 1st , Double synchro 2nd on 8/95 on (must update to 8/95
double synchro 2nd gear !)
Single synchro 3rd and 4th gear to 7/95
MY 97,98 (7/97 to 7/98)
Gearboxes have single synchro 1st , double on 2nd, 3rd and single on
4th.
Custom 1-2 sets are a straight C/over . The 3 and 4th sets require a
4th gear synchro ring to be used on 3rd gear which we convert to single
synchro.
MY99 on (8/98 on) have
single synchro 1st, double synchro 2nd, double on 3rd and single on
4th. 3rd and 4th synchro's are different to the pre-98 boxes and cant
be used. Our 1-2 sets are a straight fit , but same as the pre-98 sets
we now convert 3rd to a single synchro and it must use a 4th gear
synchro ring of post '98 type.
Try to let us know what
year model your gearbox is and we can supply the right part 1st time
with everything you need to fit the set straight into the casing
without modifications.
Straight
Cut Gearset
The Straight Cut gear
design incorporating our custom distinctive tooth profile provides even
more strength than our already ultra reliable helically cut gearsets.
One of our more popular items ... the Subaru WRX straight cut set can
be found in vehicles with over 600hp. A far cry from the standard power
output from factory and certainly a power level that needs a gear box
of phenomenal strength to get power to the ground without failure.
Straight cut gearsets are relatively noisy in operation and have an
inherent whine to them. This is due to the meshing of the teeth when
the gears are rotating. The meshing of straight cut teeth gives total
contact along the tooth at all times which gives the straight cut tooth
its added strength over the helically cut tooth . See the Image below
of a 600+HP Subaru WRX Straight Cut "Dog Box"
Helically
Cut Gearset.
Custom helically cut
gearsets are our most popular product. Mainly used to transmit extreme
power to the road in highly modified street cars. They are usually
purchased by those wanting less gear noise than a Straight Cut gearset.
Our Helical sets do produce slightly more gear noise than a standard
factory gearset as a result of a purely motor sport based gear design
which makes necessary compromises in regards to gear noise, to achieve
uncompromising strength.
Synchromesh Engagement
(Synchro ‘box)
Custom Synchromesh
Gearsets enable factory style gear selection to be incorporated into
your Helical or Straight Cut Gearbox. The Synchro’ Box is mainly used
for street applications. We make the Synchromesh rings and hubs
considerably stronger than factory components and incorporate our high
quality materials and heat treating processes into the finished product
ensuring durability you can rely upon for years to come.
Dog Engagement (Dog ‘box)
Essentially a “race only”
style of gear engagement, this has become more and more popular for
highly modified street cars. Dog Engagement gear selection is available
on either Helical or Straight cut Custom Gearsets for a variety of
applications. And a combination of Dog and Synchro’ is available on our
Subaru sets. Providing fast, positive gear selection, with or without
the use of clutch. The Custom Dog Engagement gear sets are undoubtedly
the strongest and most “user friendly” on the market. However it should
be pointed out that Dog Engagement Gearsets require fast, firm gear
selection and are quite noisy on each gear change.
