2.5 RS 'SUPERCHARGED'
- BUILDING
A
'POWER MONSTER' - " OLD SCHOOL WAY "
Our project started about three years ago, countless hours of R&D, engineering, manufacturing, fabrication, installation, tuning and good old fashion money; more than we wish to think about.
The team: Xcceleration, Kiwi, Xtreme Auto Service, Xtreme Body-Paint and Random Tech.
Our combined goal was to make a statement about teamwork and Subaru performance. So rather than just building another "Big Powered Turbocharged Car", we decided to approach the subject of Subaru performance from a different direction ("Old School"): Supercharging.
Working with the whole car and the concept of supercharging, we cleared the drawing board and started with a blank piece of paper. We decided to use a 1999 2.5RS, because of its initial very lightweight (lightened even more to 2700 lbs), which will create an awesome power to weight ratio, and great road handling.
Beginning with the engine, we completely modified the 2.5L open deck block and all it’s internals to withstand high boost and the tremendous stress created by supercharging. Some of the modifications are: custom designed forged pistons, billet rods, and T-sleeves. Then we added Xcceleration's designed and engineered 'big valve' heads and cams with custom porting and polishing, specifically designed to increase low-midrange torque, custom cams for supercharging, modified crankshaft and more. The center piece of the project is a custom designed supercharger, having an efficiency level of over 80%, as well as, a custom built water to air intercooler, intake and intake manifold engineered and fabricated by the Xcceleration team.
Then, special attention was paid to upgrading the suspension, transmission, brakes, axles, drive shaft and everything else on the car to handle the instant torque and added horsepower from supercharging. Thus, working from a top down race quality approach rather than an entry-level trial and error bolt-on mentality, then build up.
The pictures may seem repetitious or confusing, showing the engine disassembled/assembled/disassembled, out of the car/in the car/out of the car. This is to give you an idea of the number of times we engineered/manufactured/modified/installed a part, and had to disassemble the engine and start over to get it right! This is what happens when you are a 'Perfectionist'. We are really good at taking these engines apart and putting them back together!
There are several pages of pictures, with work still in process, so too many pictures for only one page!
The work is nearing completion with engine dyno tuning to be completed with dyno sheets, cosmetics for the fabricated brackets and tubing, painting the engine, fabrication and installation of remaining parts and painting the car. It seems the closer we get to finishing the car, the more we see we need to do, the further away completion feels. When it's done, the reward will be using our right foot and making Lasting Smiles with all that Instant Boost!
We will continue to post, so keep coming back.
The list of modifications can be seen at the end of the last page, shows the scope of engineering/fabrication/installation/tuning upgrades, which went into making this possible. New pictures of the remaining work will be posted when they are available.
Xcceleration wishes to thank the team, for all the hours, sweat and patience each provided to this Special Effort!
We
hope you will see there are other directions worth pursuing for
performance and power for Subaru.
You
be the Judge!
